Alumni & Athlete Testimonials

  • EMSC/SMBA Athlete Alumni - Maxwell Wheeler

Maxwell Wheeler loved skiing and cycling. From Elementary School though High School, he was involved with LERT programs, learning to ski race with EMSC and to race mountain bikes with SMBA. In High School he continued as a coach in the SMBA program. Throughout his life he embraced the outdoors and encouraged others to do the same.

“I basically grew up at Eldora in their ski programs. Starting at 4 years old and over the course of 10 years, I progressed from Eldorables and Trek to Eldora Mountain Ski and Snowboard Club youth racing league and ability programs. Now as a NCAA Champion and member of the US National Ski Team, I think it’s safe to say none of it would have been possible without Eldora and their support. I am really lucky to be an ambassador for Eldora and be able to call it home.”

From a very young age I was fortunate enough to be a part of both EMSC and SMBA as a ski racer and cyclist. These programs ignited my love for sport, provided me with incredible opportunities, and access to strong mentors and a wonderful like-minded community. Growing up as a ski racer with EMSC set the foundation and taught me the discipline I needed to be a successful student athlete. Youth ski racing sparked my drive to set my sights on one day becoming the best in the world at something. I am thankful to have been a part of a ski program that builds strong character on and off the mountain. The added bonus is now I’ll confidently tackle any mountain terrain on my skis thanks to EMSC’s incredible coaching! It was EMSC’s sister summer program, SMBA, that instilled my passion for cycling. SMBA gave me access to strong female role models, developed my early technical skills and provided me with life-lessons I carry with me to this day. My experience with SMBA inspires me to give back and spark a passion for cycling in the next generation. The big days on the big and the seemingly endless summer adventuring filled me with joy and purpose that continues to motivate my cycling career today.

  • EMSC Alumni Piper Catlin - Ski and snowboard club Boulder, CO

When I was in the CORE program, we would often be on the mountain hours before or after it was closed to the general public. Being in the mountain's aura, without the bustle of resort life, was a fantastic way to grow up. I knew that I was responsible for myself, whether in snow or sun, and I learned how to adapt to different courses, snow conditions, and mountains. I was never in control of the hill but always in control of my skiing. Ski racing requires a team effort but is ultimately an individual sport. So, when it was my turn to run the course, I became comfortable with attention on me and learned how to present myself. This skill has proven very useful in adult life. EMSC was a powerful component of my upbringing, shaping me into who I am today. The coaches and administrative staff give the athletes time and space to grow at their own pace while visibly showing their support in and out of the sport.

I enjoy EMSC because we have great adventures where I can not only have fun and hangout with friends, but also learn new tricks and how to be a better snowboarder. The trips are lots of fun. Last season I got to ride at Steamboat, Copper, Created Butte, Winter Park, Breck and Eldo. I’m looking forward to even more progression this winter.
